Sex happens to be the show stealer as far as the basic needs of human beings are concerned. One can safely say that no other need or for that matter pleasure happens to enjoy the kind of spotlight and attention that sex commands. Sadly enough, more often than not sex is used in derogatory contexts, controversially and often in the bad taste. Defending this disparaging use of sex in our society will only bring us to a number of other related issues that are far too many to be discussed in the confinement of space and intellect. Nevertheless going by the delicate nature of the sex, it is very important that this topic is handled in a very intelligent and smart manner. What's wrong in sex being a ‘Closet affair'? There can be no denying the fact that people have often adopted a very hypocritical attitude towards sex, preferring to keep it shut inside the cupboards when it has got such a prominent presence in our lives. However, what exactly does it mean when we say that sex is “an inside the closet affair”? Does it mean that human beings start making love in public glare? Most definitely not. We human beings are said to be the most civilized of all the God's creations. Sex can be the most passionate and true expression of love. But at the same time sex is also an extremely private affair, its nature is such that it is immensely essential that this divine feeling is enjoyed in the cozy comfort of one's bedroom. It is a precious feeling and is not meant to be let out in the open to be food for offensive intentions. We should in fact be indebted to our ancestors for instilling in us these values and habits and making us stand above our fellow creatures, in a higher platform. Sex the crime begetter! Is it really? Curtaining the act of love making and curtaining the issues of love making are two very different things. Sex actually should not be the skeleton in the cupboard as far as the second point is concerned. The issues of sex can be as dangerous and detrimental as the act is simple and pleasurable. Life is unthinkable and impossible without sex; therefore it is extremely necessary that the problems and milieu related to the topic are done away with, for the larger good of the society. Unfortunately, for an inordinate length of time all of us were mum and the results can be seen in the form of the crimes and social milieu's that are germinating from certain wrong perceptions and depictions of sex. Sex in the art forms Many of us act very immaturely and irresponsibly when there is mention of sex in the forms of art like film making and literature. Definitely there are certain sections that use both these art forms for highlighting sleazy contents. In fact the line that differentiates sex from sleazy and sublime is a very thin and delicate one. All depends on the person who is handling the issue of sex in the framework and confinement of art, whether this immensely beautiful gift of God is brought out to be a vulgarity or a transcendent feeling. If, while putting across a story or an incident through the medium of literature or films, or for that matter any other art form, sex or some controversial aspect of sex is portrayed somewhat explicitly but at the same time artistically then there is actually no point in raising protests and a hue and cry. We are a matured society and these things are not expected of us. It is in these things that people adopt a kind of hypocritical attitude towards sex. Definitely the regulatory measures that are to be taken in releasing such contents need to be followed. But its time we understand that sex is an integral part of living beings! The people who raise objections against such issues fail to realize that by making a mountain out of a mole hill, they are actually generating perverse curiosity! More so for the children and the teenagers. Though the exact intention behind such acts is hard to determine, the effect is definitely disadvantageous. This scenario is very much visible in countries like India and the Islam dominated nations. The Oscar nominated Indian film Water can be cited as an example. Shooting was stalled in the holy city of Bananas just because the film highlighted sexual and religious politics in the city in the plight of the Hindu widows. A number of award winning and renowned books also faced protests in the name of depicting obscenity. The Booker Prize winning book “The God of Small Things” also contained certain so-called objectionable content and faced slight protests in certain quarters. On a wider platform worldwide protests were lodged against Dan Brown's controversial book “Da Vinci Code”. Apart from other things the book and the film faced trouble in seeing the light of the day as it jolted the very base of Christianity; it portrayed Mother Mary not as Virgin Mary but as a normal ordinary woman. Also it showed Jesus as having a wife and enjoying sexual relationship. It is in nobody's knowledge as to what exactly happened. Therefore it is advisable to take it just as a piece of literary work! What exactly is our real problem? Interestingly it is doubtful whether people have problems with the depiction of sex or with the depiction of the social stigmas that are attached with the issue of sex. Many artists depict an artistic and careful handling of sex in order to bring into light some other prevalent social evils. If we turn the pages of history, we will find that all the products of any art form that has seen the light of the day and has faced protests have concentrated on other deep and grave social issues other than and along with sex. And in majority of cases such works also succeeded in achieving worldwide acclaim! Sex is in our mouths but should not be in front of our eyes! The situation is actually very ironical. We prefer to shut our eyes towards the serpent like venomous social issues related to sex and at the same time we use the word ‘sex' and its other offensive antonyms in our day to day lingo. Funnily it's actually we who protest against the so called derogatory depiction of sex, belittle it. The syllabus is f*****g long, the new teacher is a bombshell, the boss is a big a*****e, the car is damn sexy! And the list just goes on… |
